Weight loss goals are never easy to stick to in the new year: we all know how many people give up even before the end of January! But if you set your goals the right way, making sure theyíre realistic, then you really can use the new year as a way of achieving the fitness levels youíve always wanted.

Understanding Why People Fail
The main reason why people fail to meet their weight loss goals is because they arenít motivated enough. When you arenít motivated itís easy to find other things to do instead of exercising, and itís easy to start seeing exercise as a bore or a burden. This is why itís important to set a resolution that really matters to you, instead of choosing an arbitrary goal.
How To Set Achievable Goals

The key is to make sure that the weight loss goals you set are achievable Ė both physically and mentally. First, youíll need to start with motivation. Simply sitting down and thinking about all of the reasons why you want to lose weight or start exercising can get you excited about the prospect. Maybe you want to gain confidence, maybe you want to feel more energized again. Whatever it is, know what you are working for!

Next, youíre going to have to be honest with yourself and recognize your weaknesses. Youíve let things go for a reason Ė maybe you have a really sweet tooth, or maybe you got so busy or tired in your day to day life that exercise became less of a priority. By being really honest about what has stopped you in the past you can make sure you donít repeat your mistakes.
Putting Together A Realistic Plan
Now that youíve recognized your motivations and weaknesses, itís time to put together a realistic plan. The more specific you are, the better Ė itíll help keep you on track even through the tough days. This means setting a plan on how often youíll exercise, where youíll do it, and how long for. Youíll soon realize that it isnít too difficult to fit 30 minutes of exercise into your day to day life!

Donít forget that youíll also need to combine dietary changes with your exercise. But donít take on too much at once! Many people choose to go on crash diets in the new year only to give up within a few weeks. Start with something small, such as reducing the amount of sugar you put in your coffee. When youíre used to it, make another small change to your diet. The key is to make sure youíre not left craving all the foods you used to love Ė remember, the goal is to be realistic.
